Good morning, Marysville! Here’s the Sun to help you slide into the weekend.
☀️Irreversible Damage
It’s the last day of so-called “Pride” month. And good riddance.
There have been some encouraging signs along the way. Sales of Bud Light are still down after their promotion of a dude pretending to be a girl, Target stock has dropped after selling swimsuits that looked like they were for girls but had special pouches for boys who would need to “tuck it” to maintain the pretense at the pool, and even some Starbucks employees decided to strike because the “Pride” decorations weren’t so obnoxiously displayed as they wanted.
We are still not a healthy nation. We certainly aren’t a holy one. The economic push back by conservatives, and by obedient Christians, is good. But sin, certainly in ourselves, and probably in our culture, isn’t gone just because it is quiet. In his book, On the Mortification of Sin, John Owen wrote,
“Sin does not only still abide in us, but is still acting, still laboring to bring forth the deeds of the flesh. When sin lets us alone we may let sin alone; but as sin is never less quiet than when it seems to be the most quiet, and its waters are for the most part deep when they are still, so ought our contrivances against it be vigorous at all times and in all conditions, even where there is least suspicion.”
So for sake of not just being left alone but for pursuing truth and goodness and beauty, here’s a book recommendation.
Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier is one of the least enjoyable, least hopeful, more quotidian nightmarish books I’ve read. I learned some things about the transgender contagion/cult that I wish I wouldn’t need to know.
The point of the book is in the title. The cartoon picture on the front is almost painful. Shrier herself is (somehow) not against transgender tries, she is just raising questions about parents and doctors who give immediate affirmation to confused teenage girls who’ve been influenced on Instagram that they can have a secure and meaningful identity if they just become a boy. In the book Shrier offers no objections to adult’s taking the most aggressive transgender attempts; adults know what they’re doing.
As laughable as that assumption about adults is, this book increased my commitment to encouraging image-bearers of God in the glory of being either male or female (Genesis 1:27), including my own son and daughters, as well as the young people in our church and school. Though the author is only conservative in comparison with the gender activist ideologues, and though she’s primarily just asking for people to slow down and ask some questions, even she has been tagged as a hater by some. There is little left to imagine how much contempt there is/will be for consistent Christians.
I do not recommend listening to this book with your young kids around. I do recommend that dads and moms do better than simply affirming every doubt and dysphoria their kids bring up, and perhaps hearing Shrier’s collected stories of loss and angst and dereliction by parents and “professionals” would be a wake up call.
Repentance from all our sins and belief in the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only true hope of forgiveness and life, but reading Irreversible Damage may help point out how dangerous it is in real time if we don’t turn away from lies, no matter how many months we dedicate to glorifying them.
