For the sun lovers in our city, August is one of the best months of the year. Here’s the first Sun of the month (and a reminder that it’s the last month until school starts)!
☀️National Night Out
by Maggie Rothenberger
When my parents moved to Marysville over two decades ago, a man told my mom that if Everett is the armpit of Washington, Marysville is the hell of Washington. Thankfully his disparaging comment did not prevent their move, but I’m sure it did not help provide a rosy image of the town they were about to move to.
Three days ago, I attended the National Night Out event hosted by Marysville at the lovely Jennings Park. When I got there, cars were overflowing the park’s lot, down Armar Road, and into the Marysville Historical Society’s parking. One of the first things you noticed as you entered the event was how many families had come; the place was teeming with strollers and happy children with hotdogs and trinket bags. Little boys excitedly climbed through the jail car, armored car, and paramedic unit brought by the Marysville Police and Fire Departments, asking questions from the polite officers and firemen. The various booths set up provided games, pamphlets, merch, and the Marysville USTA Martial Arts booth even provided little sparring matches for excited kids, and of course, the park’s play set was a popular item as always. Towards the end of the night the Police Department displayed some of their canine unit’s skills for an audience of excited families.
As I wandered through the event, I asked a representative at almost all of the booths one question: What is one thing you love about Marysville, or something you find unique and lovable? The answers I received were encouraging and wide in range.
One resident mentioned she loves that we still have bits of the country in our town; you can find cornfields and cows in a pretty quick drive. Multiple people highlighted the beautiful and well kept parks and trails that Marysville boasts. The Strawberry and Christmas parades were mentioned as fun highlights.
However, the overwhelming answer I received can be condensed in one word: community. From a woman who moved here three years ago, and has never felt more welcomed or at home before, to a police officer who loves that their department is backed by the community, almost everyone I talked to mentioned that the community is friendly, welcoming, and engaging.
Mark James, a local politician running for state representative, was kind enough to take a picture with Peter, my son, and answer the same question. He loves how family-centric the community is, as evidenced by the event, and said, “You can see from even the booths represented here, that the community can function in the way God designed it, with people helping people.”
If a community of people helping other people sounds like anything, it certainly isn’t “the Hell of Washington”. In fact, it sounds like a rather nice place to settle down.
