That look on your face when the Sun hits your inbox:
☀️Sustainable Optimism
I have a decent idea about who the majority of the Sun’s readers are. I definitely have an idea about the characteristics of my ideal reader. And I think there’s currently a big overlap between the two, which is fun.
Most live in Marysville, want to see Marysville thrive, or they can appreciate local concerns and desire good for their neighbors, too. Most are Christians, confessing Jesus as Lord, and wanting to honor Him as best as possible in their spheres: family, church, work, city. Those who don’t profess faith might at least read to see the reasonableness of those who do. Most are not activists, they’re not rage-baiters, they’d prefer to live and let live, to depend on law and order being provided by government without needing to do much more personally than vote and show up for occasional jury duty.
That’s me. That’s many of you. But that’s not really sustainable, right?
Stay with me here for a paragraph. One of the first history books, as we think about names and places and dates, was written by Herodotus somewhere around 420 BC. His Histories is largely a record of the rise and fall of the Persian Empire. Herodotus estimated that the Persian army numbered more than a million soldiers, though moderns question if it was really more than a few hundred thousand. Regardless, as the army moved toward Greece they swallowed up all the resources, and *persons*, in their path. There was no escape. They didn’t leave anyone alone. Join or die.
It certainly feels similar to that today in terms of the progressive-pushy worldview. Where can we go from the spirit of the age? Where can we flee from their propaganda?
A great temptation is to try and Trump cultural (and presidential) dementia. I am not arguing against voting for Trump, at least not yet. Some have likened our country to a cancer ridden body and Trump as chemotherapy. In that case I’d beg the doctor for chemo; ready, fire, aim. And at the same time, in systemic ways, Trump is not good for helping us live peaceful and quiet lives. It is weird that so much of his selfishness maps onto more conservative desires, but depending on him to act inconsistent with his driving force (of ego) in ways that benefit us is a dicey bet.
On the national level, do we have a better choice? Mr. “I will not let you down <fake smile>” DeSantis? Mr. 33 Million Hindu gods Ramaswamy? Some other woman or child ruler?
As it turns out, I’m actually optimistic about the future, though not for the 2024 election cycle or near-term politics at all. I’m optimistic that the Lord will be a refuge for His people and raise up courageous and fruitful men to lead their families. I’m optimistic that one day the earth will be as full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. I’m optimistic for the Lord’s work in Marysville, and urge you to put your mind to what He would have you do. Make the best use of your time because the days are evil.
