Nice to see you this morning, Marysville! Welcome to a special election edition of the Sun.
As of today there are 11 days until November 5. We’ve asked Ben Smith to provide us with voter recommendations, and you’ll find those below.
Also today, we have our first “Letter to the Editor” to print!
AND in case October is trying to knock you down, maybe we can build you up with a little encouragement.
☀️Election Day Interest
As a Christian I’ve come to wonder if the Lord finds our interest in politics not too strong but too weak. Not that government can save us, but that we who are saved should be more active in the public square in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords.
Is that messy? Does it take maturity and wisdom and self-control? Will we have to make sacrifices of time, money, comfort, even reputation?
Not only is the answer Yes to all the above, it is YES! with all-caps and an exclamation point. The rulers of the world don’t appear to mind the costs as they pursue their purposes. How much more do believers have responsibility as servants of the Lord, and as stewards of the freedoms He’s given us, many of which came through the work of our believing forefathers? If we are to destroy strongholds, to destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and to take every thought captive to obey Christ (see 2 Corinthians 10:4-5), then isn’t voting one the least things we could do to that greater end?
Our current presidential election seems representative of different cultures not just policies. I do not want a culture of Trumps. That said, at least he has vestiges of liberty that the powers in both the Democratic and Republican parties seem hell-bent on crushing. Also, I mean it when I say “hell-bent.” While Trump is no angel, many of his actual accomplishments during his first administration enabled Christians to live in godly and dignified ways. So I will vote for Trump.
The national attention shows a national divide, and even more it shows the unembarrassed ungodliness of most of the loudest voices. Maybe there are more godly voices, but they don’t have the platform or the persistence. There is a time for the godly to be quiet, but it shouldn’t be because we are cowards. Too often it’s because we just don’t care. Voting is a sort of voice, and voting is more constructive than mere complaining.
So read Psalm 2 and let it frame the bigger battle and underscore who is truly blessed. Read 1 Timothy 2:1-2 and let it inform your prayers. Consider the following letter to the editor along with the voter recommendations as strategic efforts. Whether or not this is “the most important election of our lifetimes,” here is another election day we were given that we might please the Lord. He is interested in how we are interested.
☀️Letter to the Editor
from Lou Kitz
Striking union members booing Maria Cantwell as she blamed Trump for the high cost of housing was encouraging. Washington has been a one-party state for decades. Try to name more than one Republican that’s held statewide office. One party controls policy and the budget. One party has made everything noticeably worse in this state, yet they have convinced voters for decades that Republicans are to blame and they, the ones responsible for our problems, are the only ones who can solve them. By abandoning failed policies like a ban on police pursuits? No, they were forced to do that. Democrats promise to fix what they broke by doubling down on how they broke it and will raise taxes to do it. Washington voters have an historic opportunity to demand change. We have a solid middle of the road candidate for governor in Dave Reichert. The other statewide offices have Republicans running that will offer a change from the failed finger pointing we’ve grown comfortable with. Data breaches, missing billions in taxpayer money, and a broken ferry system. This is not the cost of government. This is the cost of one party, unaccountable leadership. Give the other party a chance this election.
☀️Voting Recommendations in Snohomish County November 2024
by Ben Smith
Our vote isn’t a Valentine, a declaration of love for a candidate, or any such thing. Voting in WA State is simply doing our part to help stem the bleeding of our American body politic, and honor God in all that we do. Part of that is resisting the Democrat machine that hates God and hates you, at every turn. Do a small good work, and go vote faithfully, remembering that Jesus is Lord. Stand.
Initiatives: (Yes on all, to work on clawing back some dollars, power and sanity from the one-party Democrat system running WA so poorly)
Yes on 2066
Yes on 2109
Yes on 2177
Yes on 2124
Snoco Safety Tax Prop 1: No. (Taxes are high enough already, and the government needs to live more frugally.)
Candidates: (Vote for candidates who will do a great deal of good, rather than those who will intentionally do evil or haven’t a clue)
US President: Trump/Vance (Because, well, obviously. Assisting Harris/Walz in any way is to side with true evil. We’d be very unhappy with 100% or near enough of Harris/Walz actions in office, so there you go. Trump/Vance will definitely get a good deal of it right or near enough while in office, so there you go.)
US Senate: Dr. Raul Garcia (Cantwell can’t really seem to do anything well, so she’s been absolutely perfect for our state for so long.)
US Rep District 1: Jeb Brewer
US Rep District 2: Cody Hart
WA Governor: Dave Reichart (Ferguson as Governor would be a true cunning wolf in sheep’s clothing - admittedly a pretty pathetic-looking mangy thing, but still a cunning wolf.)
WA Lt Governor: Dave Matthews
WA Secretary of State: Dale Whitaker
WA State Treasurer: Sharon Hanek
WA State Auditor: Matt Hawkins
WA Attorney General: Pete Serrano
WA Commissioner of Public Lands: Jaime Herrera Beutler
WA Superintendent of Public Instruction: David Olson
WA Insurance Commissioner: Phil Fortunato
State Senator District 10: Ron Muzzall
State Rep District 10 Position 1: Carrie R. Kennedy
State Rep District 10 Position 2: Gary Wray
State Rep District 38 Position 1: Julio Cortes (Only because his opponent is even worse, who is an outright Communist-type Socialist, or close enough)
State Rep District 38 Position 2: Myrnie Claywell
State Senator District 39: Keith L Wagoner
State Rep District 39 Position 1: Robert J Sutherland (He’s ready to replace Sam Low having gained a good deal of experience and seasoning lately and is ready to go back into the State Legislature. Sam Low also holds a couple other elected positions, so he’ll be OK.)
State Rep District 39 Position 2: Carolyn Eslick
WA Supreme Court Justice Position 2: Dave Larson
Snohomish Superior Court Judge Position 12: Mary Anderson
Public Utility District 1 Commissioner District 2: Amber King (Her opponent is truly bad news.)
Arlington School District Proposition 1: No
Lake Stevens School District Proposition 1: No
Sultan School District Proposition 1: No
☀️Local Market
