Today is the 52nd Friday since the first issue of the Sun came out on Friday the 13th last year. Happy newsletter anniversary to you and me!
☀️Two Roads Diverged
I’ve been thinking about a couple things that Tucker Carlson said in an address given at the Heritage Foundation’s 50th anniversary gala just a few days before he was fired by Fox News. Whether you like him or not doesn’t change the value of his observations.
Here is the video if you want to watch it first. The full thing is 36 minutes, and here’s a clip with the six minutes of grist for my gist.
He said that “it might be time to reassess the terms we use to describe what we’re watching.” It used to be that people argued about the right path and the better process but they wanted to get to the same place. The presumption was “mutually agreed upon outcomes,” we all desired more prosperous and free citizens in an ordered society. Sparks flew when trying to decide the how, but the debates shared rational basis.
Carlson said that’s no longer the case. Perhaps it never was, but it’s certainly hard to disagree at this point. The polarization is real because the goals are different; two roads diverged in a wood, but they are not equally desirable. This isn’t primarily a Red/Blue, Republican/Democrat disagreement, though the Donkeys are more aggressive in their public castration policies. What is the desired outcome of transgenderism and the sexual mutilation of children? “An androgynous population? Are we arguing for that?” Or, “if you’re telling me that abortion is a positive good, what are you saying? Well, you’re arguing for child sacrifice, obviously.”
The second thing that stands out to me about Carlson’s comments are that he urged people to pray. Our problem is not political but theological.
Western Civilization as we’ve known it will implode without repentance. We are our own gods. We have taken on the role of deciding good and evil, as in, we think we can define them, not just distinguish between them. As has been said, if there is no God over the system/state then the State is god. In the state of WA our governor and attorney general and legislature defy the Constitutions (both state and federal) because they disregard law, especially the transcendent law, God’s law.
While I think that many of the most recent moves are out of desperation, it doesn't change that they are deadly. Our official policy is that death is better. WA has de facto legalized hard drugs, released convicted criminals, prohibited law enforcement from pursuing criminals, banned citizens from self-protection using certain guns, antagonized parents by offering “sanctuary” to gender-confused kids, and stockpiled pills for abortions. These are not rational policies sharpened through debate, these are irrational programs driven by depravity.
How do we get out of this mess? There are a variety of tactics, but there is only one sure motivation: faith in God. We confess that Jesus is Lord, and we will obey Him and let Him decide how to use us. As we fear the Lord we laugh at those who exalt their folly. We work to tear down the strongholds they love. We expose their deeds of darkness and shine the light of truth. This can be done by anyone with a Twitter account or two lips. This can be done by God-fearing parents, by gospel-preaching pastors. It ought to be done by those in the media; it’s one reason for the Sun. And we pray.
